A KEY TO SYMPTOMS IN WOMEN: PELVIC PAIN

Pain in the pelvic area can originate from the pelvic structures themselves, or what may feel like pelvic pain may in fact originate from other structures, such as the intestines. There are various causes of pain in this area. Of these, PID, ectopic pregnancy, and appendicitis are medical emergencies and require immediate attention. Pelvic pain must be assessed by a health care provider as soon as possible.

Appendicitis. The appendix is a small out-pouching of the colon in the right lower abdomen that can become infected and inflamed and cause pain in this area. Although the appendix is not in the pelvis, sometimes pain from an inflamed appendix may be difficult to distinguish from other types of pelvic pain. Usually the pain begins around the navel and then migrates down to the right lower abdomen. There may also be fever. Appendicitis (an inflamed appendix) can usually be distinguished from other causes of pelvic pain by a physical examination and appropriate testing.

Endometriosis. Endometriosis is the condition in which the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) dislodges and becomes implanted in other areas of the pelvis or intestinal tract. The tissue is still responsive to the changes in hormones that cause a period and therefore bleeds, and this can cause pain, usually during a menstrual period. Endometriosis is diagnosed through a procedure called a laparoscope in which the internal structures are examined through a small incision using a laparoscope.
