HEALTH AND VACATIONS: SPIDERS

Bites by mildly poisonous spiders, scorpions and centipedes can cause pain and swelling around the area of the bite. Wash the punctured skin with soap and warm water and keep the patient warm and rested. If his condition deteriorates, call your doctor immediately.

The venoms of the Sydney funnel-web spider and the red-back spider— called the katipo in New Zealand—are capable of causing death. Bites from either of these two species can cause pain around the area of the bite, profuse sweating, nausea and vomiting. Wash the immediate area with soap and warm water. Loosen any restrictive clothing and keep the patient warm and as quiet as possible. Call your doctor immediately and advise him of the type of spider that caused the bite so that the victim can be injected with antivenene or receive suitable hospital treatment as soon as possible.
