REVERSIBLE METHODS OF BIRTH CONTROL

Most younger women and men who choose to use contraception want to be able to have children at some future time in their lives. They want to protect themselves against unintended pregnancy now, but they also want to be able to reverse the contraceptive effects when they decide they want to have a child.

Many couples prefer a method that is quickly reversible. All barrier and behavioral methods of birth control are immediately reversible. Fertility is restored to its previous levels as soon as the contraceptive method is discontinued. With hormonal methods, however, it may take some time for the effects of the hormones to leave the body. If you are considering a hormonal method and are planning to become pregnant soon, be very sure to know how much time is needed to reverse the contraceptive effects of the methods you consider.

Ever since the dawn of history, women and men have wanted to be able to decide when and whether to have a child. Many of the earliest methods of family planning they tried are still used by millions of women and men around the world. These methods are most often used by people who have few alternatives. But many of the ancient methods are also preferred by some people who have access to the latest advances in contraceptive technology. For thousands of years, abstinence, mutual pleasuring without intercourse—outercourse, withdrawal, predicting fertility, and breast-feeding—were used by our ancestors to prevent unintended pregnancy. These methods still play important roles in family planning today.
