SOLUTION OF IMPOTENCE PROBLEM: INJECTIONS AND VIAGRA
For John, a tough, lit engineer, there was no warning. Overnight he developed a problem. I le didn’t know where it came from or why. All he knew was that he felt devastated.
He couldn’t remember a time when he hadn’t been able to achieve a spontaneous erection. Previously, he would barely have to think about sex before one would appear. Now he was only 54 and nothing was happening.
His wife of 10 years was sympathetic and together they worked at manual stimulation until there was a result. But John’s ego was bruised and became even more so when this experience continued to be repeated.
‘It was so frustrating. It really hit me mentally. I kept on thinking why is this happening. There is a powerful macho myth out there and I was affected by it, I was failing.’
After a visit to his family doctor, John was referred to a urologist, who did a battery of tests and found all in good working order. Next he went to a sex physician, who talked about injections.
‘The idea sounded horrendous but once I got over the initial shock, I kind of got used to it. I never liked using them but they were satisfactory.’
When Viagra became available, the physician suggested he might like to try it.
‘The method of delivery is far more attractive so I agreed but I find it only works in certain circumstances. If we were relaxed and there was a lot of time it was fine, but during the week, I would fall asleep waiting for it to work. We like to have a meal and a bottle of wine before bed and often I would doze off before anything could happen. On these occasions it is better if I use an injection. The result is instant. Now I use a mixture of both and my choice depends on the circumstances. But I can’t just switch willy nilly. My physician recommends I wait 48 hours before switching.’
In retrospect John, now 59, thinks stress undid him. About a year before the problem developed, he changed jobs and went from regular hours to running a food business that needed attention around the clock. At the time he didn’t feel exhausted, but he knows he was.
